  Culture

  Students have many breaks during the day when they get time off to switch classes and take care of personal things. Students tend to have lockers where they keep their books and personal belongings. Different friends meet during the different breaks. Let’s peek into their break conversations.

  学生每天有很多课间休息,他们利用课间休息换课并处理私人事情。学生大多有储物柜,把书和个人物品放在里面。不同的课间休息会遇到不同的朋友。让我们赶快看看他们课间休息的对话吧。

  Scene 1

  • What’s up?

  • Just get out of my face!

  Dialogue 1

  (Tom and Ed are hanging around their lockers almost late for class.)

  (Tom 和Ed在他们的储物柜附近,他们快迟到了。)

  Tom: Hi, Ed. What’s up? Tom: 嗨,Ed。怎么了?

  Ed: Nothing. Ed: 没事。

  Tom: Doesn’t look like it to me. Tom: 看来不是那样。

  Ed: No, I’m not. Ed: 我没有。

  Tom: Well, don’t get bent out of shape about it. Tom: 好啦, 别心烦了。

  e.g.: Hey, what’s up? Long time no see.

  Just get out of my face! get out; don’t trouble me 滚开

  e.g.: I don’t want to talk to you anymore, so just get out of my face.

  What are you so ticked off about? angry 生气,发怒

  e.g.: If you’re so ticked off, why don’t you talk about it?

  I blew the final exam. I failed the exam. 我考试不及格

  e.g.: It was my last chance, but I blew the final exam.

  You’ve got to be joking! Are you serious? 你一定在开玩笑!

  e.g.: You won the lottery? You’ve got to be joking!

  ... don’t get bent out of shape ... don’t get upset 别心烦

  e.g.: I didn’t spend all the money, so don’t get bent out of shape over it.

  Dialogue 2

  (Sally and Jenny are sitting around the school café during break.)

  (Sally 和Jenny 课间时坐在学校咖啡馆附近。)

  Sally: Jenny, you look terrible. What’s eating you? Sally: Jenny,你看起来很糟糕。什么事困扰你?

  Jenny: Don’t bother me! Jenny: 别烦我!

  Sally: Hey, chill out! I’m just trying to help. Sally: 嘿, 放松!我只是想帮你。

  Jenny: Sorry, Sally. It’s not your fault. Jenny: 对不起,Sally。不是你的问题。

  Sally: So, what’s the problem? Sally: 那出什么事了?

  Jenny: I drew a blank on the algebra test. Jenny: 我代数考试考得一塌糊涂。

  Sally: No kidding! Didn’t you study for it? Sally: 别开玩笑!难道你没学吗?

  Jenny: Yeah, but nothing was clear during the test. Jenny: 学了,但在考试时我头脑一片模糊。

  Sally: That’s too bad. Anyway, I’m sure things will

  turn around next semester. Sally: 太糟糕了。不管怎样,我肯定下学期事情会变好的。

  Jenny: I’m thinking of dropping out. Jenny: 我在考虑退学。

  Sally: You can’t do that, Jenny! Sally: 你不能那样,Jenny!

  Jenny: I’m dead serious about this, Sally. Jenny: 我是非常认真的,Sally。
