　　People have different opinions on the effect of television on children. Some think that it isgood for children to watch "IV while others believe that television is bad for children. In myopinion, most of the effect TV has on children is bad.

　　By the time children reach school, they have spent up to one-third of their waking hours infront of the television. Because they just sit back and let thing happen to them while watchingTV, they become passive. As we all

　　know, children are inventive and they have the ability to imagine a whole world of theirown. But what happens when their imagination is not needed, when TV does all the imaginationfor them? Obviously, these kids are not going to grow up as inventive and imaginative astheir parents, for they have been robbed of creative impulses by television watching.

　　On one hand, TV watching also forces kids into becoming consumers and then tricks them.They are surrounded by ads for dangerous toys, mind-less games, and unhealthy foods. Theyforce their parents to buy them, for the children themselves are not wise enough to detect thefalsity of so much advertising. On the other hand, by watching too much TV, children are overex-posed to violence. They watch programs like murders, fights and many other crimes forhours every week, with no adult around to tell them that life is not like that. The effect of theheavy dose of violence is to suggest kids that violence is an ordinary way of life ,and thatslugging, shooting and cheating are ways to succeed.

　　The total effect of TV on children is dangerous. It is time for parents to take charge andsupervise their children’s play instead of parking them by the tube and hoping it will act as ababy-sitter. The influence of TV is so important that parents will have to be on their guard tomake sure that their children are not being harmed by exposure to it.

　　Television is playing a very important part in our lives. But like other things, it has both advantages and disadvantages.

　　In the first place, television is not only a convenient, but a cheap source of entertainment.

　　For a family of four, for example, it is more convenient as well as cheaper to sit comfortably at home, with unlimited entertainment available, than to go out in search of amusement elsewhere. All they have to do is press a button, and they can see shows of every kind, not to mention the latest political

　　discussions and exciting football match. Some people, however, think this is just where the danger lies. The television viewer takes no initiative. He is completely passive and has everything without any effort on his part.

　　Television informs us about current events, the latest developments in science and politics, and offers an endless series of instructive and entertaining programs. It could be argued that the radio can also perform this service; but on television everything is much more vivid. Yet again there is a danger. We get addicted to it, so dependent on its moving pictures that it begins to dominate our lives.

　　There are many other arguments. The poor quality of programs is often criticized. But it is a great comfort to many lonely people indeed. I think we must realize that television in itself is neither good nor bad. It is the uses to which it is put that determine its value to society.
